Ask four things before the first deal
Which ruleset and edition are we using? Are there house variations? How are points and any stakes handled? What should we do if someone is unsure about a call? Write the answers down if the group is new.
At a tournament, follow the organiser’s rules and referee process. At a casual table, agree a teaching pace and how mistakes will be handled. A friendly exception should not quietly become a surprise rule for the next player.
Make room for concentration
Keep drinks clear of the tiles, allow players to see exposed groups, and announce actions clearly. Ask before giving advice during someone else’s live hand: even well-meant help can reveal information or change the game.
If you host, a short practice hand can introduce the rhythm. Let new players ask questions without having to perform expertise. The point is to get everyone into the game.
Take one useful question home
After play, choose a moment you did not understand. Was it an unfamiliar word, a legal claim, a scoring line, or a strategic choice? That distinction tells you where to go next on this site.
